| Ken
Nicholls v Charlie Roberts |
|
| Both
players struggled with feel early and
after 3 holes it remained even. Charlie
jumps to a 1 up lead after Ken 3 putts
the 4th but Charlie returns the favor and
after 6 it remained even. Ken takes the
lead with a bird on 7, then jumps out in
front by 2 when Charlie gets tangled in
the grass on 10. He quickly gets
that back with a 34ft bird putt on
11. 12 and 13 saw both players scramble
to save pars. Ken manages to jump back
out to a 2 hole lead with a 10ft putt on
14, but Charlie answers on 15 by
draining a 7footer after Ken fails
to hole out a 22yd bunker shot, leaving
it 6 inches short dead center. On 16, Ken
once again goes 2 up with a 7 ft birdie
putt. Knowing he needs the next 2 holes,
Charlie plants his shot 18 ft behind the
hole, while Ken is 27 ft short in the
open rough. Ken then slams the door as he
nails the chipin bird while Charlies'
putt lips out. A hard fought 3 and 1 for
Ken with both players struggling, but
having a good time on the links. |

| David
Russell v Charles Belida |
|
| I always love these tight
matches and once again my Ryder Cup match
goes the distance against a top player.
After a shaky start by both players on
hole one, Russell went on a birdie spree
winning 3, 4 and 5 to open a surprising 3
hole lead. Belida though hit back quick
and birdied 6 and 7 to close back with
his own salvo. The 8th was halved in par
before Russell took the 9th with his 4th
birdie to lead 2up at the turn. Belida
was well known for his back 9 sprint and
today was no exception, he took the 11th
to close the gap before Russell rallied
by taking the 12th. Then Belida applied
the pressure, with birdies again at 13
and 14 he levelled the match. Russell had
one last throw of the dice winning 15
with a birdie of his own before Belida
birdied 16 to level again. Then he snaked
at 28 foot birdie putt at 17 for a
slender lead as Russell shaved the hole.
Finally at 18 Russell was lining up what
he thought was his birdie putt to save a
half, with Belida over 50 feet away in
the deep rough. Then the unthinkable, the
chip grabs the hole as it passes and
spins around and in for Belidas 3rd
birdie in a row and the match is over.
Great play all round in a real birdie
fest. That Belida is so darn hard to beat
down the stretch !

| Paul
Klodzen v Ian Roberti |
|
| It was thought to be a
very even match, and the beginning showed
it. The first several holes were all
halved with pars. Ian lost control
of his driver and gave Paul several
opportunities to win several holes on the
front nine and went into the turn 3
up. The back nine saw both players
fighting from the rough off of the tee,
but a few crucial missed up and downs for
Ian put him behind the 8 ball being 5
down with 5 to play. He then proceeded to
nail tee and approach shots to 4.5 feet
to put the pressure on Paul to seal the
match. Paul was able to do so by
hitting a 9 footer for birdie to halve
hole #14 and bring the match to a close
at 5 & 4. I unfortunately
cought Ian on an off day with his driver
and on another match the rsults could
have been very different. |

|
| Stefan Sabellek &
Mike Hoag vs. Paul Klodzen & Gary
Pomeroy |
|
| World triumphs after hole
16, up 3. USA opened with a Paul Klodzen
birdie chip to go 1 up. World evened the
match with a Mike Hoag sandshot stiff for
par. Paul put USA back to 1 up with
another great chip. World saved par from
rough on hole 4 to put it back at all
even. Stephan made great 8 foot birdie on
hole 5 to put World 1 up. World moves 2
up with par. Very tough pin position on
hole 7. no pars, but World moves 3
up.Paul K hits great up to 4.7' for
bird..World is 2 up. Hole 9 halved in
bogies. At hole 10 Paul knocks another
up to 21ft. USA makes bird to put World 1
up on match. Gary makes birdie putt to
even the match at hole 11. At hole 12
Paul K hits 280 yard second to 27'. hole
is halved in par. World pars hole 13 to
go 1up. 14th halved in par. World moves 2
up after 15th. World wins match after 16,
3 and 2.
|
| |
|
| David
Russell & Alan Wilson v Doug Casker
& Gary Pomeroy |
|
| Another close fought battle in
the windy conditions went to the final
hole. The World team started the
strongest winning 2 out of the first 3
holes to open up an early 2 hole lead,
but USA clung on with both teams finding
the fairways well but never quite getting
into birdie range on the greens. USA had
chances to claw back on 6 and 7 but from
over 20 feet they were not easy ones and
the gap remained at 2up until the 8th. #8
and USA find the high grass off the tee,
the first time either side has today, and
they are unable to recover as World go
3up. A key hole was the 9th, as the World
team find the deep grass themselves on
their approach and USA chip close to end
the front 9 2 down. #10 and World
have a chance to open the lead again with
USA in trouble off the tee, but despite
finding fairway and green they 3 putt to
stay 2up. Then USA hit back with both
teams bunkered at the green, the American
recovery is better and the gap is now 1.
#12 and a World chip goes around the hole
but stays out for a half. #13 and both
tee are in the fairway but USA are long
on their approach and the World players
duly take their chance to restore the gap
to 2up. #14 and both at c30 feet in 2
shots to make safe pars. #15 and both
team find the deep rough but recover for
pars and halve the hole. #16 and Pomeroy
needs a 33 foot putt to stay in the
match, it rolls and rolls and drops -
World are still 2 up with 2 to play. #17
and World find the par 3 bunker, USA 24
feet away which Pomeroy again holes for a
birdie and takes the match to last hole.
#18 and despite all the drama on the last
2 holes, World hold their nerve, Wilson
finds the fairway and Russell stiffs an
approach to within 20 feet. With USA
laying up short from the rough the World
team 2 putt for the hole and the match.
An
excellent game, closely matched with the
World team clinging onto an early lead
they never actually lost, despite a
valiant effort from USA.

| Ron
Kwestroo & Stefan Sabellek v Melvin
Henry & Russ Van Dommelen |
|
| Russ and I had another squeaker
tonight against Ron Kwestroo and Stefan
Sabellek. I think we were pretty evenly
matched for the entire round. First three
holes were tied, with birdie, par,
birdie. On number 4 they hit a nice shot
onto the green 20 inches from the hole
for a gimme birdie. We managed par so the
World went 1 up. They drained a 13 foot
putt for birdie on #5 while we just
missed and got a par. World 2 up. Stefan
got one right into the tall grass. Ron
tried to give it his all but the ball
went short into the water. They recovered
nicely to keep it to a bogie, but we got
our par to take one from them. World 1
up. Undaunted, they came back with a par
on #7. Unfortunately I didnt get
out of the tall grass well enough and we
made bogie. World 2 up again. Next hole,
#8, was a turnaround again. We carded a
birdie to their par. World 1 up. 9 and 10
were tied with pars. #11 Ron put his tee
shot 10 feet from the hole and Stefan
drained it for birdie. My shot from the
bunker came up just under 10 feet and we
had to settle for par. World 2 up #12 was
tied again with pars by both teams. #13
saw the World team barely miss their
birdie putt. Fortunately we got ours to
make it World 1 up again. #14 saw USA
make a surge by carding another birdie to
get the match to All Square . #15 was
tied with birdies this time. #16 saw the
World go up 1 again with another birdie
while we barely missed a 15 footer. World
1 up #17 relinquished pars to both teams
again. A chance to halve the match coming
up on 18. #18 saw both of us in the
fairway. Approaches saw the World 13 feet
away and USA 12 feet away. World drains
the putt. USA studies the putt (why,
except to keep it to 1 up) and drains it.
World wins the match 1 up.

| Robert
Dickerson v J Roberts |
| This match started out with Jim
Roberts showing his form by making 2
excellent par saves on the first two
holes from trouble positions. On hole 3
he continues by sinking a 5 ft birdie
putt to take an early 1 up lead. Hole 4
saw Roberts again show his putting
powress by sinking an 11 ft. birdie putt
to go 2 up.Hoel 5 was all Dickerson as
Roberts ran into trouble with his 2nd
shot drifting off into the left rough.
Roberts then made excellent recovery
shots to save his par but Dickerson
safely got his birdie to gain a hole
back.\par On hole 6 Roberts ran into
trouble off the tee but his second shot
was brilliant to make it to 16ft from the
cup. His hot putting stroke continued as
he made the putt to halve the hole with a
well earned birdie. That is the way it
remained until the 8th when Roberts again
ran into trouble with the rough while
Dickerson stuck his approach shot to
within 7 ft and made the birdie to tie
the match up.\par With renewed vigor
Dickerson began to attack the course and
it was only Roberts superb scrambling
game that kept the match tied through the
next 3 holes. Hole 11 saw Jim Roberts
birdie putt slide by the edge from\par 7
ft while Dickerson's approach to the par
3 gave him a gimmie birdie. \par The
World Team had their first lead of the
day. Hole 12 again saw Dickerson make a
12 birdie putt to go 2 up in the match .
Wiith a 2 up lead going into 13 Roberts
showed his brilliance by making an
excellent par save out of the sand while
Dickerson's birdie putt brushes the hole.
\par The roles were reversed on hole 14
when Roberts birdie attempt brushes the
hole while Dickerson's goes centre cup
for a 3 up lead.\par Hole 15 saw Roberts
having to press to get back into it and
unfortunately missing the fairway off the
tee. The match was finally decided when
Dickerson putt his approach shot on the
par 4 to within 22 inches for the birdie
and seal the deal.\par Both players had a
great time in the match while chatting on
ventrilo while playing and were more than
happy to say they will remain in touch
for some future games together. World
team wins mach 4 and 3. |

|
| Don
Miettinen v Doug Casker |
|
| It was
a memorable match to say the least.
It may have been the first time that
opposing Ryder Cup Captains have faced
each other in singles play. Judging by
their average scores on tour this year,
this match was predicted to be a close
one. And the prognosticators were bang on
in this 'pickem' match. Both
started well with birdies on #1.
Miettinen made a move on 3 with a
excellent 2nd shot and gimmie birdie
which Casker could not match. Doug made
an excellent recovery from the high grass
to match Miettinen's par on 4. The next
few holes were halved until Miettinen's 6
ft birdies on 8+9 put him in control at 3
up at the turn. However, he started to
lose his snap on the back 9.
Consecutive bogies on 11+12 saw his lead
to dwindle to 1, before he righted
the ship. Two consecutive short birdies
on 13+14 saw him regain his 3 up lead.
That was shaved to 2 after a conceded
birdie on 15. Both players made excellent
birdie recoveries from the thick
rough on 16. That meant Miettinen was
dormie. Shooting to a very difficult
pin placement on 17, both players made
excellent shots on the green.
But the match looked secure as Casker was
26 feet away to Miettinen's 13 ft. This
is where the excitement began. Casker
calmly rolled in his putt to extend the
match. Miettinen was so shaken, that he
missed the snap on his birdie try which
extended the match to its limit. On 18,
Casker calmly found the middle of the
fairway. Miettinen, still ruminating
about his missed opportunity to end the
match on 17, sliced his drive into the
high grass. To make matters worse, he
could not get his recovery shot onto the
fairway. Now knowing that a par for
Miettinen would be difficult from his
current position, Casker left his
approach in a safe position 36 ft away
from a tightly placed pin but on the
green. Miettinen's third shot from
about 140 yards barely cleared the bunker
in front of the green, but left him 52
ft. short of the pin in US Open
rough on a side hill lie. But he knew
what he had to do to win the match.
He had to sink that 'mother'. And using
his LW, that's just what he did!! The
resulting improbable par left Casker
speechless. It was probably the same
feeling Greg Norman had when Larry Mize
chipped in to win the Masters.
Doug made a valiant effort
with his long putt , but just as Norman
before him, it was not meant to be. An
unforgettable win for Miettinen but not
after a great match with a great
competitor. |

| Steve
Sullivan v Bill Moore |
Bill and I teed it up in
our singles, both ready to win.
We both scored pars on the opening
three holes to calm our nerves. On
the 4th hole I sliced a poor tee shot
into the right-hand fairway bunker. Bill
hit a wild hook into the deep stuff on
the left.
I just missed the snap on my bunker shot
leaving myself in the deep stuff with 118
yards to go.
Bill hit his 5 wood very well, but only
found the bunker short left of the green
with 37 yards still to go. I managed to
get my third shot onto the green but
still had 18 feet to go to save par.
From a nasty downhill lie in the bunker,
Bill hit an excellent shot to leave
himself an 8 foot putt for par. I misread
my par putt leaving Bill to sink his and
go 1 up. Worse was to come on the
5th hole. Having both found the green, I
failed to read my birdie putt leaving
Bill to sink his birdie putt for a 2 up
lead. We both birdied the 6th hole
but I was worried I was letting the game
slip away. On the the par 3 7th,
we both misjusged our tee shots. Bill's
ended up on a nasty uphill lie in the
rough. I was fortunate to find the bunker
short left, and managed to get up and
down to save par.
Bill left his chip 15 feet short of the
hole and failed to make his par putt.
Back to just a 1 up lead for Bill.
We both managed pars on the 8th hole and
I felt my swing was improving slightly.
On the 9th I took advantage of my
improving swing to find the fairway.
Bill's tee was wide right and he could
only flop it out onto the fairway. His
third shot found the green but a long way
from the hole for a par. Yet again
I found the bunker, but again managed to
get up and down for par. From over 40
feet, Bill rolled it to gimme range for a
bogie. I was back to All Square.
The back started started poorly for both
of us. My tee shot just ran into the
rough on the right. Bill's was wide right
in the deep stuff and he could only
advance his 2nd shot 22 yards into the
shorter rough. Bill's 3rd shot found the
green 47 feet from the hole. However I
did not judge my second well, leaving
myself 30 yards short of the green. I
chipped to 10 feet and made the putt for
par. Bill two-putted and I was 1 up.
I had a stroke of good fortune on
par 3 11th hole when the wind blew my
sliced tee shot bacl toward the hole, but
still 15 feet right. Bill hit his tee
shot into the bunker short left, tehn hit
it 7 feet past from a difficult lie. I
missed my birdie putt, but Bill's par
putt just drifted pat the hole to leave
me 2 up. We both found the fairway
on the 12th hole. From 209 yards Bill
misjudged his approach ending up 40 feet
past the hole in the rough. From 187
yards, managed to find the green, but was
still 15 feet from the hole. Bill's chip
shot was excellent to gimme range. Yet
again I over borrowed on a birdie chance,
but was still 2 up. I found
another fairway on the next hole after
deciding it was bettr to take a 3 wood
off the tee. Bill found the deep stuff
again wide right with his tee shot, but
he was 15 yards nearer the green. I
finally hit a decent approach, leaving
myself a 12 foot birdie chance from 107
yards. Bill had found a really nasty
section of the deep rough and could
barely advance his ball. He decided to
concede the hole to extend my lead to 3
up. We both found the same left
hand fairway bunker on the 14th. I was
fortunate to have a decent lie but still
couldn't stop the ball rolling into the
rough. From very close to the front face,
Bill did very well to even get the ball
out of the bunker. He had no luck at all
and his ball ended up in the deep rough
again. However, I failed to capitalise
and we both bogied the hole. From
the 15th tee we both went our separate
ways. My tee shot was wide left, while
Bill's was way over on the right. We were
both in the nasty deep rough again. I
decided to punch a LW out but couldn't
stop it on the green, leaving myself a
chip from 22 yards behind the green. Bill
had poor luck again when his second shot
stayed in the deep rough. Worse luck came
on his 3rd shot when his LW took a flyer
and left him 58 yards behind the green.
His next shot finally found the green 10
feet from the hole. I then chipped to 6
feet and sank the par putt to go 4 up and
win the match. This was a very
tough match and the score is indication
of how we both played. I was really happy
my recent good form stayed with me into
the singles match. Thanks Bill for
a really challenging singles match. |

| Don
Miettinen & Ian Roberti v Jim Roberts
& Bill Moore |
|
| All four
players had mixed results in their
first round matches with Roberti and
Roberts successful in their matches and
looking for a 2nd point for their teams
this weekend. After matching pars on hole 1,
Roberti continued his hot play with
birdie putts of 16 and 52 ft
on the next 2 holes to stake his team to
an early lead which they would never
surrender. The long bomb on 3 had the
crowd groaning as their home team quickly
fell behind. A sloppy World bogie on 4
cut the lead to 1. However,, a
fabulous chip by the red hot Roberti for
a gimmie birdie restored the lead to 2 on
the next hole. A discouraged US team
found water on the next hole leaving them
3 behind. A 32 ft birdie putt by
Miettinen on 7 pushed the lead to 4.
Roberts made a lovely 23 fter birdie
putt on 9 to cut the lead to 3
at the turn. The US could not maintain
the momentum. After a bogie at
10, the US squad was down 4 again. The
rest of the back 9 was much of the same.
The US team could not get any closer than
3. The World team finally ended the match
when Roberti calmly stroked in a 7 fter
on 16. |

|
| Stian de
Jager v Melvin Henry |
|
| Hole
1. We both start well with birdies
with Stian putting the ball within 7 feet
after hitting the fairway bunker. Hole 2.
I get lucky and chip in from 53
feet for a birdie to go 1 up. Hole
3. Again, we both birdie the hole.
Hole 4. I find a greenside bunker
and chip out to 31 inches for par, but
Stian puts his approach 5 feet from the
hole for an easy birdie. All square. Hole
5. Stian pops in an eagle from 38
feet away to put the World up by one.
Hole 6. We halve the hole with birds.
Hole 7. I put my tee shot within 13
inches for a gimme birdie. Stian make par
to bring the match back to All Square .
Hole 8. Two birdies again Hole 9. We take
a breather and recorded pars. I dodged a
bullet here when Stian just barely missed
his birdie putt. Hole 10. I come up short
on my approach shot and see the ball roll
back down the fairway to 41 yards out.
Stian takes note and almost sinks his
approach getting it within 25 inches for
a gimme birdie. I failed to chip in and
World goes back to 1 up. Hole 11. Stian
stays hot and birdies the hole while I
par it. Word 2 up Hole 12. We both
make our pars on this hole. Hole 13.
Another pair of pars. Hole 14. More pars
from us. Hole 15. We turn on the steam a
bit and birdie this hole. Things are
starting to darken a bit. Hole 16. I
manage to birdie the hole. Amazingly
Stians 8 foot putt manages to do a
360 in the hole but stays out. World 1
up. Hole 17. I return the favor by
missing a 7 foot birdie put to give the
World a 2 and 1 win. |

|
| Robert
Dickerson & Ian Roberti v Jason
Klopotoski & Russ Van Dommelen |
|
| The World team came
loaded for bear in this one as Dickerson
made his approach shot to within 3 feet
for the bird while Team USA couldn't
convert. On the second hole it was Ian
Roberti's turn as he drains his\par 16
foot birdie putt to take a 2 up lead. The
third hole saw Roberti convert another 7
footer to putt the World team up by 3. A
fine chip by Russ Van Dommelin on the
fourth gave Team USA their first hole as
Dickerson wasnt able to convert his
putt.\par However, Team USA's trouble off
the tee on 5 opened the door as Dickerson
placed his second shot to within 13 feet
as Roberti converts a very fine putt for
the EAGLE! The World team again goes up
by 3. USA's tee off woes continue on 6
continue while Roberti makes an excellent
shot to within 5 feet with Dickerson
converting for the birdie. World team up
by 4. \par The 7th hole saw Roberti
hitting his tee shot to within 11 feet
while Team USA had their's roll to 24
feet away. While Team USA saw their putt
burn the edge, Dickerson made no mistake
for the bird and a 5 up lead for the
World team. Pars for both teams on hole 8
changed nothing to the score, but an
errant tee shot off the tee saw the team
from the USA drop another hole to go 6
down at the turn.\par Holes 10 and 11
ended up as sister kissers as the World
team continued its steady play while Team
USA started to show signs of life by
converting pars. The match was finally
decided on hole 12 when Team USA's second
shot drifted off to the far left of the
green while the World team placed their's
safely on 24 ft. away. Team USA saw their
putt to save par just burn the edge of
the hole while the World team safely
converted their's.\par The final saw the
World team win resoundingly 7 up with 6
to play. An enjoyable match with all
players having a good time. |

|
| Charles
Belida & Jim Roberts v Don Miettinen
& David Russell |
|
| The battle of the
clickers was a close fought affair and
one that was ultimately won on the
greens. The Americans started the
stronger with a birdie at the first hole
for an early lead. #2 was halved in par
but at #3 USA found the heavy rough off
the tee and Russell holes out for a
birdie after a nice approach by
Miettinen. A 24 foot birdie putt by
Miettinen at #4 and the match swings the
way of the World team. #5 and both teams
find the fairway but miss the green on
the approach, the World team are bunkered
which enables USA to win the hole with a
par. #6 and both teams hit fairway and
green to within 15 feet in two shots.
Both birdie to stay level. #7 and all
sorts of fun takes place with Belida
finding the bunker at the par 3 and
Russell distracted by the crowd hooks
deep into the rough. The World team cant
recover from there and USA lead again. #8
and both hit fairway and green Belida to
15 feet and Russell to 8 feet. World
holes the birdie putt to level again. #9
and after both find the fairway World
team stray right of the green with USA in
centre of the green. World cant get up
and down and USA lead by one at the turn. #10
and both teams come up short due to a
large slope. Again USA putt out better
and claim a 2 hole lead. #11 and both
teams are on the green at the par 3
inside 20 feet but neither can make a
birdie. #12 and USA start to stray off
the tee finding the bunker and then
laying up. The World team cant capitalise
and the hole is halved. #13 and USA find
the right heavy rough with World at 15
feet in two shots. A great recovery sees
USA make par and World cannot find the
telling putt. USA remain 2up. #14 and USA
are in the right heavy grass again. This
time Russell hits to 8 feet and Miettinen
converts to pull one back. #15 and the
flag is peppered, World 8 feet and USA 5
feet. Roberts holes out for birdie but
World miss and the gap is 2 again. #16
USA are down the right rough again but
World find a bunker, both lay up short at
the par 5. In the end Russell needs a 24
footer to save the match, which he holes
for birdie. #17 Russell finds the bunker
off the tee and Roberts follows him. USA
find a better recovery and World miss the
putt to take it to the last hole.
It was a close game, but USA holed out
a little better than the World team and
this was enough to take the match. Great
game all round and congratulations and
well played Charles & Jim.

| Stefan
Sabellek v Randy Short |
|
| Stefan Sabellek and Randy
Short faced off in their singles match
Tuesday Nov. 20th at Shinnecock Hills.
Two very evenly matched clickers that
worked their way onto their respective
teams. All was set for a very challenging
match between the two gents. Both men had
a few jitters at the start but were proud
to be on their respective teams. Both
men were able to make pars on the first
hole. At #2 Sabellak took his tee shot to
the bunker while Short went long behind
the hole. Sabellak made a great bunker
shot to 32inches and was able to save par
whereas Short missed the snap on his chip
and left himself a long 26 footer for par
which he missed by mere inches, giving
Sabellak the first lead at 1 up. On # 3
both men settled in and made nice pars so
Sabellak remains 1 up. At #4 Sabellak
runs into trouble in the high grass but
is able to get his 2nd shot to 52 feet in
the rough behind the green. He makes a
very nice chip to 4 feet but misses the
par putt by inches and has to settle for
a bogie. Short made a nice 2nd shot to
7feet on the green but the icicles on his
putter prevented him from making the bird
but saved his par and the match is back
to all square. After a long drive on #5,
Sabellek makes a beautiful 2nd shot to 12
feet from the hole to again apply
pressure on Short. Short hit his 2nd in
the bunker and then blasted the 27 yard
shot to 7 feet. It was too late though as
Sabellek was able to take a gimmie birdie
to win the hole and go back to 1 up. At
#6 both men make the green in regulation,
Sabellak at 32feet and Short at 19 .
Sabellak makes a nice putt to 3 feet and
saves par. Short is able to chip some of
that ice off his putter, rumored that it
might be able to stop global warming, and
drains his 19 footer for the birdie and
puts the match back to all square. On #7
Short chokes off the adrenaline rush
after the bird at #6 and puts his tee in
the back bunker while Sabellak shows him
how it is done and puts his tee shot on
the green 12 feet from the hole. Short
makes a excellent bunker shot to 23 feet
to save his par but cant fend off
Sabelleks bird to go back to 1 up
again. At #8 both men turned it up as they
got their 2nd shots in close. Sabellak to
10 feet and Short in real close at 4
feet. They both make the birdies sing.
Heading to the turn both men put their
2nd shots away from the hole. Sabellak
made a nice 47 feet chip from the short
rough into 5 feet and saved his par.
Short again gets another putt just close
from 41 feet to 12feet. He saves his par
and they turn the corner with Sabellak in
the lead at 1 up.
After the turn on #10, Sabellek again
heads to the high grass on his tee shot.
He says he likes the tough lies. This was
a tough one that kept his 2nd shot to a 6
footer whereas Short took his 2nd from
the fairway to an impressive 3.8 feet
from the hole for the gimmie birdie and
brings the match back to all square
again. Its turning into an excellent
match as both men battle for their
respective teams. At #11, Sabellek makes
an awesome tee shot to 6 feet from the
hole to really put the pressure on Short,
who hit his tee shot to 16 feet. Sabellak
had the tee shot and Short had the putt
as he made his long one for birdie to
stay all square with Sabellak who made
his 6 footer. They both run into trouble
at #12. Short found the right rough while
Sabellak again heads for the high grass
right. Short was able to save par from
the rough but Sabellak missed a 16 footer
for his par and fell behind for the first
time in the round and Short went 1 up.On
#13 they both recover nicely. Sabellek
sent his 2nd shot into 25 feet for the
gimmie birdie to try and take that lead
back away from Short, who hit his 2nd
into a very good 9 feet . He also made
his bird to hang on from the attack and
keep his 1 up lead. Hole #14 seemed to be
the hole that no one wanted to win. For
some reason on this hole, they both
turned into the Hackerville Twins. Short
stumbled his way through to a triple
bogie letting Sabellak take it with a
double bogie and bringing the match back
to all square. This should win the worst
hole award for the whole Ryder Cup. At
#15 they battled to pars for both as
Sabellek got his 28 feet putt to 10 feet
and saved par, Short had to come out of
the bunker from 25 yards to 8 feet and
made his save putt. Still all square
after 15 with 3 to go. PRESSURE IS ON
BOTH AND SWEATY PALMS ALL AROUND!
On #16 Sabellek opened it up and took
his 3rd shot to 3.8 feet for the gimmie
birdie while it appeared that Short lost
his snap and went to the rough then the
bunker on his way to the green. He saved
his par but the damage was done as
Sabellek again took a 1 up lead with just
2 to play. At # 17 Sabellak made a nice
tee shot to within 14 feet of the hole.
Then Short caught an unfortunate wind
change as he teed off and was left 23.3
feet from the hole. He makes a valiant
effort to make the birdie and putts into
4 feet from the hole, leaving Sabellek
with the opening to shut the game down.
Sabellek makes his 14 footer for BIRDIE
and wins the match for the World Ryder
Cup Team at 2 up with 1 to go!
It was a great back and forth match
with a great effort from both players.
Very close round all the way with no one
having more than a 1 up lead the whole
round until the 17th hole. I personally
hope that everyones rounds are as
exciting and as close as this one was. I
want to thank Stefan for a most enjoyable
time and wish him a hearty handshake and
congratulations for the excellent round.
